The Oxbridge Women in Computer Science Conference is an annual conference that brings together junior and senior female computer scientists at Oxford and Cambridge, encourages collaboration through formal and informal discussion, and provides a perfect opportunity for young researchers to present their research and get valuable feedback in an open, friendly and informal environment.

 

The conference is free to attend for computer scientists at all UK universities and this year will be held at the University of Oxford. It will include talks by key speakers from industry and academia who will share their experiences with the participants. The deadline for abstract submission has been extended to 15th February 2019 and conference registration is now open!

 Important Dates

Clear your calendar - this is going to be the best conference yet! The Oxbridge Women in Computer Science Conference is on 9th March, 2019, and you are invited to take part. Whether you are excited to hear from industry representatives, present your research, or do some networking, there is definitely something for you.

Abstract Submission: *DEADLINE EXTENDED* to 15th February 2019

Current undergraduate, MPhil/MSc, PhD/DPhil female students, RAs and PostDocs are encouraged to submit abstracts for presentations and posters on their topic of research. Presentations will be 10 minutes long . There are no proceedings for the conference, and hence posters can be under submission for other conferences or workshops.

Abstracts should be of no more than one single-column page including all figures and references (format US letter size 8.5 × 11, font size no smaller than 10). Please include on the page the name, affiliation and email address of the author, research area and whether the abstract should be considered for a presentation and/or poster.  Abstracts should be submitted along with your registration here.

Poster can be up to size A0.  ( A1 posters are also fine!)

Notification: 26th February 2019

Each presentation and poster abstract will be reviewed by members of the scientific committee. Rejected presentations may be offered a poster slot.

The conference organiser from Women@CL (Cambridge) will be arranging free transportation to and from Oxford.

I'm not a Computer Science student and/or I don't study at Oxford/Cambridge, can I come?

You are definitely welcome to register and attend the conference! If you are not a Computer Science student, you cannot be considered for a presentation *UNLESS* you are doing research in collaboration with a Computer Science department.

Do you provide any childcare?

What should I wear to the dinner?

Anil Madhavapeddy

Dr Anil Madhavapeddy is University Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. He leads the OCaml Labs group at Cambridge, and work on the MirageOS
unikernel operating system as a new foundation for networked, multi-scale applications. He also develops open-source software such as the secure OpenBSD operating system. He has worked in a variety of senior architecture, engineering, product management, sales and as well as government and research organisations for many years and a co-author of a functional programming book titled - Real World OCaml.

Gemma Gordon

Gemma Gordon is Operations Director for the OCaml Labs group based at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, and the CEO of OCaml Labs Consultancy. She manages core projects of the group together with organising community events in the field of functional programming and open source. Before joining OCaml Labs Consultancy, Gemma has many years work experience with a sole trader startup and a
limited company startup - AllYearbooks.

Anna Ukhanova

Dr Anna Ukhanova is one of the Research ​ Leads in Google Research Europe which focuses on machine learning research on a wide area of ML and AI related
topics. Anna received an M.Sc. in Information and Communication Systems from St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation in Russia, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). She is a grantee of the
Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation for research work in the field of visual perception. She has been working with Google Switzerland since 2014.

Laura James

Dr Laura James is Technology Principal at Doteveryone, an independent think tank that champions responsible technology for the good of everyone in society, and Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, catalysing interdisciplinary research around trustworthy technologies. She has worked extensively in technology and leadership roles in R&D, startups, civil society, humanitarian relief and more. Laura holds Masters and PhD degrees in Engineering from the University of Cambridge.
Since graduating, she has been the first employee at a connected home startup, on the management team of an AI startup, scaled a rapidly growing civic tech nonprofit, and co-founded a community workshop, a startup NGO, and most recently a member owned co-operative.

Ilona Budapesti

Ilona is founder and CEO of ilona.tech - Bringing 1M Women To Tech and also doing her MSc at Oxford, applying Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing on Buddhist texts. She is President of Oxford Entrepreneurs, which helps  startup founders to scale their companies and had many years software development experience in
large tech organisations.

Alina Petrova

Alina is a third-year DPhil in Computer Science from the University of Oxford. She has studied Linguistics and NLP, and is now doing research in the area of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. Beginning of her third year she joined two other Oxbridge students as a co-founder of a biomedical startup , which is currently operating in stealth mode.
